Lindsay Clancy Trial: Family Testifies Mother Was Begging for Help Before Killing Children

August 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A Desperate Plea Before Tragedy

Lindsay Clancy was “begging for help” in the months before she killed her three children and attempted to take her own life in January 2023. Testimony provided during her murder trial in Plymouth Superior Court paints a portrait of a former labor and delivery nurse spiraling into a mental health crisis. Defense attorneys argue that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis—a rare condition linked to the stress, sleep deprivation and hormonal changes that follow childbirth—that should exempt her from criminal responsibility for the deaths.

A Mother-in-Law’s Witness

Susan Clancy, the defendant’s former mother-in-law, testified that the family watched the defendant’s mental decline with mounting dread throughout the latter half of 2022. The two women, both labor and delivery nurses, shared a close relationship. Susan Clancy told the court that the defendant was open about her struggles, frequently seeking support as her condition deteriorated.

The court reviewed a text message sent on November 30, 2022, in which Lindsay Clancy wrote, “I’m not okay and I’m terrified of taking meds tonight.” Her former mother-in-law testified that the defendant expressed significant anxiety regarding her reliance on benzodiazepines to manage sleep deprivation.

Rapid Descent into Crisis

Family members, including mother Paula Musgrove and sister Allison Ozga, documented a rapid decline in Clancy’s mental health. Musgrove testified that by December 2022, her daughter was exhibiting signs of paranoia and had explicitly stated she was experiencing “thoughts of harming the children.” By the end of that month, Ozga added, the defendant reported having suicidal thoughts every day for a month. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington maintains these symptoms were exacerbated by a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and the side effects of antidepressants prescribed following the birth of her third child.

The Prosecution’s Case for Premeditation

Prosecutors contend the killings were a calculated act, not the result of a psychotic break. The state presented evidence suggesting Clancy planned the events by sending her husband, Patrick Clancy, on errands to isolate the children. The prosecution pointed to the defendant’s daily activities on January 24, 2023—including taking the children to a doctor and playing in the snow—as evidence of rational decision-making.

Forensic Findings in the Hospital

Dr. Paul Zeisel, a clinical and forensic psychologist who met with Clancy in the hospital shortly after the incident, testified that there is no indication she is fabricating her symptoms. Zeisel described finding Clancy handcuffed to a hospital bed, unable to move below her sternum due to her suicide attempt.

According to Zeisel, Clancy reported that she was experiencing hallucinations at the time of the killings. He testified that she told her husband during a later conversation that “a male voice” had ordered her to kill the children and then take her own life, leaving her with no perceived choice. The trial remains ongoing.
