Lidl launches Lidl Connect mobile service in the Irish market

Lidl launches Lidl Connect mobile service in the Irish market

October 23, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Lidl has entered the Irish mobile phone market with the launch of Lidl Connect, offering a limited deal of €8.99 per month for the first 100,000 customers, The Irish Times reported. The service provides unlimited 5G data, unlimited calls and texts to Irish and UK networks, 50GB of EU and UK roaming data, and 100 international minutes to more than 38 countries.

Lidl Partners with 1GLOBAL to Launch Eir Network Service

The new offering operates on the eir network in Ireland and is delivered in partnership with 1GLOBAL, Lidl’s global telecommunications partner. Customers can secure a physical SIM card inside any Lidl store nationwide for €0.99 or choose an eSIM entirely through the Lidl Plus app without an extra charge. Robert Ryan, Chief Executive Officer at Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland, stated that the company is bringing its core focus on value into the mobile sector through a straightforward sign-up journey. Food content creator and cookbook author Gina Daly also noted that the app-managed account setup makes it easy for existing users to find what they need.

Ireland serves as the first market to launch this specific iteration of Lidl Connect. Similar telecommunications models already operate under the Lidl Connect brand in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The monthly rolling plan requires no long-term commitment, allowing subscribers to cancel at any time while keeping their existing mobile numbers or selecting new ones.

Lidl Entry Price Undercuts Tesco Mobile and Legacy Contracts

The new entry price point of €8.99 sits slightly below rival discount offerings like Tesco Mobile’s €10 SIM-only deal. However, it represents a steep drop compared to typical long-term bill pay contracts that often run around €50 a month. Market analysis cited by The Irish Times indicates that consumers frequently overpay on legacy contracts by maintaining high tariffs long after their initial two-year device repayment periods have concluded. Sky Mobile research previously estimated that roughly 300,000 people in Ireland overpay on mobile services annually, resulting in a collective waste approaching €150 million each year.

Despite regulatory rules requiring operators to notify customers when contracts expire and provide best tariff advice, many users fail to act on notifications. Consumers who own their devices outright face significantly lower monthly expenditures by switching to SIM-only rolling plans, provided their current handsets are unlocked by their network operators.
