Former MBC President Park Sung-jae Reflects on Early Collaboration with pioneering Streamer “The Great Library“
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA – Former MBC President Park sung-jae has publicly shared insights into his early recognition of the power of online video communication, specifically citing a formative encounter with early internet broadcaster “The Great Library,” a figure boasting 4.4 million subscribers. Park’s reflections, published by My Daily, detail how a 2018 interview with the streamer reshaped his understanding of digital media and influenced MBC’s subsequent strategy.
Park, reinstated to MBC in 2018 and later serving as a deputy director on the morning news program, initially learned of The Great Library through a crew member’s proposal. Intrigued, he read the streamer’s book, The God of YouTube, and conducted an hour-long interview. He was struck by the broadcaster’s dedication to building an audience on platforms like afreecatv and YouTube Live, as well as his humility and positive energy. This experience lead Park to a crucial realization: YouTube’s core strength lay in direct communication with viewers, and it represented a new market chance rather than a threat to conventional broadcasting.
“The most important lesson I learned from the Great Library was that the essence of YouTube is communication,” Park wrote. Following his appointment as MBC president, he actively encouraged employees to create YouTube content, emphasizing the importance of viewer engagement. He consistently advised his team, “Try what you want to do. But don’t try to teach viewers. You just have to go with the viewers.”
Park also recounted a later attempt to collaborate with The Great Library on a game broadcast for MBC, which the streamer declined, preferring to focus on his existing YouTube presence. He expressed his respect and admiration for the broadcaster, wishing him a peaceful future. The article notes The Great Library was recently seen at the 2026 S/S Seoul Fashion week Fashion Show at dongdaemun design Plaza.Reporter Kim Ha-young
