Liberia Courts Amazon Following Starlink Launch, Eyes Expanded Internet Access
Monrovia, Liberia – Buoyed by the recent arrival of Starlink services, Liberia is actively seeking to attract Amazon’s Kuiper internet project to its market, aiming to further expand connectivity and digital opportunities across the nation. Liberian Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Cybelle taylor, recently engaged with Amazon representatives, praising the country’s improving investment climate and advocating for its inclusion in Amazon’s rollout plans.
Liberia’s pursuit of Amazon comes as the West African nation looks to rapidly close the digital divide and capitalize on the economic benefits of widespread internet access. Starlink officially launched commercial services in Liberia in January 2024, offering a new option for connectivity, especially in remote areas. Though, the government recognizes the potential for increased competition and broader coverage with the addition of Amazon’s Kuiper system, which utilizes a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites. The success of Starlink has demonstrated Liberia’s readiness for advanced satellite internet technology and its potential as a viable market for further investment.
Taylor reportedly pledged to facilitate Amazon’s entry into the Liberian market and connect the company with relevant stakeholders. while Amazon has launched its first satellites for the Kuiper project - beginning in October 2023 – the company must first establish fully operational commercial services and assess potential availability across Africa. In September 2023, Amazon signed an agreement with Vodafone to support network deployment and enhancement on the continent, a move seen as crucial for the project’s expansion.
The initiative is being closely followed by industry observers,as Liberia aims to position itself as a regional leader in digital infrastructure and innovation.
