Kiwifruit Spill Closes Road After Trailer Tips
A trailer carrying thousands of kiwifruit overturned on State Highway 2 near Te Puke in the Bay of Plenty on Tuesday morning, spilling its load across the roadway and bringing traffic to a standstill.
The incident occurred just before 8:00 a.m. Local time when the trailer, which was transporting fruit from a local orchard to a packing facility, lost stability on a bend and tipped onto its side. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after the spill was reported.
Police confirmed that no injuries were sustained in the incident, though both lanes of the highway were closed in both directions to allow for cleanup operations. Traffic was diverted via local roads, causing significant delays for commuters and freight vehicles during the peak morning period.
Crews from the Novel Zealand Transport Agency and regional contractors began removing the scattered kiwifruit using shovels, brooms, and mechanical sweepers. The fruit, which had been packed in bins and loose on the trailer bed, was deemed unsuitable for commercial use due to contamination risks from road debris and potential bruising.
Local authorities stated that the spilled fruit would be collected and disposed of in accordance with biosecurity and food safety protocols. No estimate was provided for the total volume of fruit lost, though eyewitnesses described the spill as covering a stretch of road approximately 50 metres long.
The highway was fully reopened by mid-morning after cleanup crews completed the removal of debris and conducted a final safety inspection. Normal traffic flow resumed shortly thereafter.
Police have opened a standard inquiry into the cause of the trailer tip-over, with initial assessments focusing on load security and road conditions at the time of the incident. No charges or enforcement actions have been announced as of this reporting.
