Kenyan Runners Sweep Top Prizes at 2023 ​New York City Marathon

NEW YORK – Benson Kipruto and Hellen Obiri of Kenya claimed victory in the men’s and women’s divisions of the⁢ 52nd ⁣New York City Marathon on Sunday, november 5, 2023. Kipruto finished​ with a time of 2:08:24, while Obiri secured her⁣ first​ marathon win with a time of 2:27:41.

The annual 26.2-mile race, a cornerstone ‍of the global marathon circuit, draws elite athletes and tens of thousands of participants to new York City. This ​year’s event showcased both seasoned marathoners ⁢and rising stars, competing for a substantial prize pool and the prestige of winning one of the world’s ⁣most iconic races.​ the results mark a significant achievement for Kenyan runners, continuing their dominance in the sport, and signal Obiri’s arrival‍ as a major force in marathon ‌competition.

the total guaranteed prize purse for the 2023 ⁢NYC Marathon reached $969,000, with‌ $100,000 ​awarded to each ⁢of the male and female open ‌division winners. In the wheelchair divisions,Marcel Hug of switzerland won the men’s‌ race in 1:30:16,and​ Susannah Scaroni of the United States defended her title in the women’s race with ​a time of‌ 1:42:10.

This year’s⁣ wheelchair division also saw a historic‌ increase in prize money,with each winner receiving $50,000 – the largest wheelchair division prize in the race’s history.
