Karan Johar to Celebrate Kuch Kuch Hota Hai at 2028 EIFF
The Edinburgh International Film Festival will screen a special 30th-anniversary celebration of the 1998 Bollywood romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai during its 2028 edition, featuring director Karan Johar in attendance.
Screen Scotland Meeting Leads to Festival Booking
The anniversary screening agreement emerged from a meeting in Mumbai earlier this week at the offices of Dharma Productions. First Minister of Scotland John Swinney and Screen Scotland interim executive director David Smith met with Johar to discuss future collaborations between Scottish and Indian filmmaking, according to festival organizers.
The upcoming event marks a return to Scotland for the production, which was the first major Indian film to shoot extensively across the country. Locations utilized for the original 1998 release included Eilean Donan Castle, Glen Coe, Tantallon Castle, and Inchmahome Priory.

“It was a pleasure to meet Karan Johar in Mumbai […] I look forward to welcoming him to Edinburgh,” John Swinney said in a statement provided by the festival. “During my visit to India, I met with people from the Indian film industry, including representatives from Dharma Productions, to discuss opportunities for future collaboration between Scottish and Indian filmmaking.”
EIFF Plans Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Retrospective for 2028
EIFF CEO and festival director Paul Ridd noted that his programming team is already planning far in advance for the milestone screening at the festival’s 81st edition. “So we jumped at an opportunity like this, to plant the seeds for a celebration of a legendary, much-loved film at our festival, a film featuring Scotland and some of the most iconic stars of Bollywood cinema on screen,” Ridd said.”
The 81st edition featuring the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai retrospective is scheduled for 2028. Before that milestone, the festival’s 80th edition will run from August 12 to August 18.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai stars Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul Khanna, Kajol as Anjali Sharma, and Rani Mukerji as Tina Malhotra, centering on a complex college love triangle.
