It: Welcome to Derry Drops Surprise Special on HBO Max
Fans of Stephen King’s fictional universe received an unexpected holiday release when It: Welcome to Derry dropped a surprise 30-minute special titled “A Story of Derry” on HBO Max at midnight on Saturday, thewrap.com reported.
Expanding the Lore Before Pennywise
The special episode explores events taking place hundreds of years before the arrival of Pennywise. In the installment, three youngsters venture into the Western Wood and encounter a terrifying ancient spirit. Online speculation has pointed to the narrative serving as an origin story for the Shokopiwath tribe, the indigenous people referenced earlier in Episode 4 of the series.
The original drama series comes from Warner Bros. Television and ranks among the top four series premieres globally in the history of HBO Max. Andy and Barbara Muschietti executive produce the show through their Double Dream production company alongside Brad Caleb Kane, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jamie Travis, and Dhana Gilbert.

Season 2 Shifts to 1935 Great Depression Setting

According to network details, Season 2 will shift the timeline to 1935 during the Great Depression. The upcoming episodes will center on the bloody massacre of the Bradley Gang, a group of bank robbers who stop in Derry to purchase ammunition and subsequently encounter supernatural horror.
Brad Caleb Kane will serve as the sole showrunner for Season 2. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour,” HBO Max Original Programming Head Sarah Aubrey said in a statement.
The Muschiettis also expressed enthusiasm for the continuation. “Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege,” the producers said in a joint statement.
