Justin Timberlake: Arrest Footage Battle – Singer Seeks to Block Release

Justin Timberlake is attempting to prevent the release of bodycam footage from his June 2024 arrest in Sag Harbor, New York, citing concerns over privacy and potential damage to his reputation. His legal team filed a petition with the court to block the release of the footage after media outlets requested access through open records laws.

Timberlake was initially charged with driving although intoxicated (DWI) after allegedly running a stop sign and swerving between lanes. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving while ability impaired (DWAI) in September 2024, receiving a taakstraf, or community service, as part of a plea deal. The DWAI charge is not considered a criminal offense.

According to court documents, Timberlake’s lawyers argue that the public release of the bodycam footage would serve no legitimate public interest but would instead be driven by sensationalism, exposing the singer to ridicule and harassment. They contend that the release would constitute an unwarranted intrusion into his private life and could inflict lasting harm on both his personal and professional standing.

The case highlights the ongoing tension between the public’s right to access police records and the protection of individual privacy. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office reached a mutual agreement with Timberlake to seal the video, restricting access to his legal team, police, and prosecutors, according to TMZ.

Timberlake had initially claimed he had “only one martini” before his arrest. The singer’s attorneys are now seeking to prevent the dissemination of the bodycam footage, arguing that its publication would be detrimental. As of March 3, 2026, a ruling on the petition to block the release of the footage is pending.
