Japan Arrests Soldier After Embassy Trespass, China Protests
Tokyo – A Japanese army soldier was arrested Wednesday following a breach of the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo, an incident that has prompted a formal protest from Beijing and further strained already tense relations between the two nations.
The 23-year-old member of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) was taken into custody by Tokyo police on suspicion of trespassing, authorities confirmed. The arrest comes after the individual allegedly scaled a wall and entered the embassy compound on Tuesday morning, according to Japanese media reports.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, stated Wednesday that Beijing was “deeply shocked” by the incident and had lodged a “solemn representation” with the Japanese government. Lin demanded a thorough investigation, punishment for the individual involved, a formal explanation from Japan, and preventative measures to ensure the security of Chinese diplomatic missions and personnel.
Japanese police have indicated the suspect, stationed at Camp Ebino in Miyazaki prefecture, allegedly entered the embassy with the intention of confronting the Chinese ambassador regarding China’s stance on Japan. Reports suggest the individual threatened to harm himself with a knife he was carrying if his demands were not met. No injuries were reported.
The GSDF has confirmed its full cooperation with the police investigation. NHK public television reported that a knife was discovered at the scene.
The incident occurs against a backdrop of escalating diplomatic friction between Japan and China. Tensions have risen since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated in November that Chinese military action against Taiwan could be considered a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, potentially justifying the use of force. Beijing views Taiwan as a renegade province and has responded with diplomatic and trade measures against Japan following Takaichi’s remarks.
Lin Jian criticized Japan for failing to adequately manage and discipline its Self-Defense Forces personnel, and for not fulfilling its responsibility to protect Chinese embassies and consulates. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has yet to announce any further actions in response to the embassy breach.
