Swedish Football Loses Stalwart Janne Hammarbäck
STOCKHOLM,SWEDEN – Janne Hammarbäck,the dedicated head of security for the Swedish national football team for over two decades, has died at the age of 68 following a period of illness. Hammarbäck’s passing marks the end of an era for the team, having overseen security for 295 international matches beginning in 1992.
Hammarbäck, a former policeman, took on the role in 1992 and remained a constant presence through numerous qualifying campaigns and tournaments, including the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
“Janne was completely unique. He had a keen eye but was so down-to-earth,” said former national team captain Tommy Söderberg, speaking to Swedish media. “It is indeed so sad.”
During the 1994 World cup, Hammarbäck faced a meaningful challenge when a suspected bomb threat was made against the Swedish team’s bus. Fortunately, the threat proved unfounded, and the team’s safety was maintained.
Beyond his professional duties, Hammarbäck forged strong relationships with players and staff. He developed a notably close friendship with superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic, beginning when “Ibra” was preparing to make his debut for the national team in 2001. Prior to their first meeting, reports surfaced that Ibrahimovic had previously impersonated a police officer in Malmö, and Hammarbäck was tasked with investigating the matter.
“After that we were friends,” Hammarbäck told VF (vestmanlands Folkblad) in a previous interview. “I visited him both in Holland and Italy, including during the time he was suspended from the national team in 2006. It took a little persuasion for him to come back.”
Söderberg emphasized Hammarbäck’s commitment to the team, stating, “He meant a lot to players and managers. He was so committed and cared about everyone.”
Hammarbäck’s death represents a significant loss to the Swedish football community, remembered not only for his diligent work but also for his personable character and unwavering dedication to the national team.
