Izyan Ahmad: From Federer Duel Request to Pro Debut & Indian Wells Loss

Thiago Agustin Tirante of Argentina defeated 15-year-vintage Izyan Ahmad in the qualifying round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Monday, March 2nd, 2026, winning 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour. Despite the loss, Ahmad’s participation in the tournament marks a significant moment in the young American’s burgeoning tennis career, one that began with a viral “pinky promise” made to Roger Federer nearly a decade ago.

Ahmad, nicknamed “Zizou,” first gained public attention in 2017 at the US Open when, as a seven-year-old, he was given the opportunity to ask Federer a question during a press conference. He asked the Swiss legend to continue playing for another eight or nine years, so he would have the chance to compete against him professionally. Federer responded with a smile, offering an “almost promise” and a “pinky promise” that he would consider it.

The moment resonated widely, and three years later, Ahmad had the opportunity to hit balls with Federer in Zurich as part of a promotional event for one of the tennis star’s sponsors. Now, nearly a decade after that initial exchange, Ahmad is attempting to forge his own path in the professional ranks.

Currently ranked 120th in the junior world rankings, Ahmad is a member of the John McEnroe Tennis Academy in New York. He made his professional debut in doubles in November 2025. He received a qualifying wildcard for the Indian Wells Masters tournament, a gesture he acknowledged as largely based on the story surrounding his earlier interaction with Federer. “I know that this invitation was probably 90 percent luck,” Ahmad told the ATP Tour website. “But I suppose I did enough for the other ten percent that the tournament thought of me. I will try to make the most of this experience.”

Ahmad’s family originally hails from Baramulla, Kashmir, India, relocating to the United States in 2009. He was born in California in 2010. Although the match against Tirante, ranked 74th in the ATP world rankings, proved a challenging debut, Ahmad’s presence in Indian Wells signals a step towards fulfilling the ambition he voiced as a child.
