Iyanla Vanzant says Tamar Braxton lied about sexual shaming claims
Spiritual adviser Iyanla Vanzant stated during an appearance on The Jason Lee Show that singer Tamar Braxton lied about a controversial 2018 family intervention, asserting that Braxton will ultimately “have to answer to God” for claiming she was sexually shamed during the filming session.
Braxton and Vanzant Dispute WE Tv Intervention
The conflict traces back eight years to an episode of WE tv’s Braxton Family Values. Vanzant was brought onto the reality program to help the Braxton sisters resolve internal family fractures, but the session devolved into a tense confrontation. Braxton later stated in media appearances, including a segment on The Wendy Williams Show, that she felt pressured and that Vanzant mishandled sensitive discussions surrounding her childhood sexual abuse.
Vanzant dismissed those claims during her interview with Lee, maintaining that Braxton fabricated the account of sexual shaming. “I love her, and she’s not well,” Vanzant stated, adding that the singer is “imbalanced, out of alignment, out of touch.” Vanzant also emphasized that she did not initiate the appearance, explaining, “I went on their show. They did not come on mine. They invited me onto their show.”
Previous Apology Fails to Resolve Active Friction
Public friction between the two has previously seen brief moments of pause. In June 2019, Braxton posted an Instagram apology directed at several individuals, including Vanzant, in an effort to move past their grievances. Braxton's mother, Evelyn Braxton, publicly defended Vanzant's intentions regarding the 2018 session.
Despite those prior attempts at resolution, Vanzant’s recent remarks indicate the dispute remains active. “I don’t mind being the bad guy if that’s what it’s gonna take for you to get clear about your imbalance,” Vanzant said. She added that Braxton is “never gonna have to answer to me” regarding the statements.
Vanzant Returns to OWN with New Specials
Vanzant’s comments coincide with her return to television following the 2021 conclusion of her nine-year OWN series, Iyanla: Fix My Life. Earlier this year, she launched Iyanla: The Inside Fix, which revisited memorable interventions from her original program and led OWN to commission additional television specials.
