Iwoca Secures £250m Debt Facility Amid Sale Rumors

July 27, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Small business lender Iwoca has secured a new £250m debt facility to scale up its lending power, just days after instructing boutique tech investment bank Qatalyst to launch a sale process targeting a valuation well north of £1bn, according to reports by City AM and Sky News.

The fresh credit line originates from a household name bank and private credit giant Waterfall Asset Management. This capital injection arrives as small and medium-sized enterprises across Britain increasingly demand larger loan sizes to fuel their ongoing operations and expansion phases.

According to internal data published by Iwoca, the landscape of SME borrowing shifted significantly over the preceding year. The share of loans issued to small businesses valued between £50,000 and £100,000 nearly doubled, climbing from 27 per cent to 42 per cent. To satisfy this higher market appetite, the fintech accelerated its own borrowing framework. Over the course of 2025, Iwoca lent 60 per cent more cash to small businesses than in previous cycles, cementing its status as one of the fastest-growing fintech enterprises in the United Kingdom.

Romain Guileminet, Iwoca’s head of capital, emphasized the strategic importance of the new credit arrangement. “This facility means we can offer more businesses the kind of support they’re looking for, backed by some of the best institutional partners in the market,” Guileminet stated.

Weighing a Billion-Pound Sale Amid Market Consolidation

The debt facility functions as a flexible borrowing arrangement, enabling the company to draw down cash freely up to a pre-agreed limit. Yet, the timing aligns with widening speculation regarding the long-term independence of the scale-up.

Despite the engagement of bankers, sources close to the situation emphasize that the corporate exploration remains in its very early stages. “There is a likelihood that nothing will happen,” a person familiar with the matter noted, indicating that the initial market testing may not yield a definitive transaction.

Corporate restructuring and dealmaking within the UK lending sector have accelerated concurrently. Firstrand initiated efforts to offload its SME-focused lender Aldermore after that unit became ensnared in the wider motor finance scandal. Meanwhile, Oaknorth anticipates decisions regarding a federal American banking license, following its acquisition of Community Unity Bank based in the United States.

Evaluating Macroeconomic Pressures on SME Liquidity

Private credit managers like Waterfall Asset Management continue to deploy capital selectively into digital-first lending platforms that demonstrate verified underwriting models and scalable origination channels.

Market analysts note that valuations north of £1 billion for profitable fintech lenders reflect a shifting premium toward platforms capable of capturing prime business borrowers directly. Traditional high street banks, encumbered by legacy cost structures, increasingly cede ground in the £50,000 to £100,000 loan tier to agile digital operators equipped with automated credit-decision engines.

Whether Iwoca ultimately transitions to a trade buyer, private equity ownership, or continues its trajectory as an independent scale-up depends heavily on Qatalyst’s early-stage market soundings over the coming quarters. Financial institutions and corporate borrowers alike will monitor how these competing deal processes reshape the competitive dynamics of European SME lending.
