Israel Searches Northern Gaza for Body of Last Hostage Ran Gvili

February 4, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Israeli military has launched an operation in northern Gaza to retrieve the body of the last remaining hostage in the Palestinian enclave.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas conducted a surprise attack on Israel, abducting 251 people and taking them into Gaza. It was a bloody day for the Middle Eastern country.

A cease-fire between Israel and Hamas in October 2025 led to the release or rescue of many hostages, including some who were killed during the initial attack. Though, one hostage remained: 24-year-old Ran Gvili.

Gvili, a Border Police officer, was taken from Alumim, a religious kibbutz in southern Israel, near Gaza, on October 7th.

In late January 2024, Israel declared gvili dead after receiving intelligence confirming his death. This new operation aims to bring his body home for a proper burial.
