Global Demonstrations Erupt in Support of Iran Protests Following Mahsa Amini‘s Death
Thousands worldwide marched Saturday in solidarity with ongoing anti-government demonstrations in Iran, sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in the custody of iran’s morality police. The protests center on opposition to iran’s mandatory hijab laws and broader calls for change within the country’s conservative regime.
Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman, died on September 16 after being arrested for wearing tight pants and what authorities deemed an “improper” hijab. Her family alleges she was tortured and killed. The incident ignited widespread protests within Iran, quickly drawing international attention and condemnation of the Iranian government’s response.
Demonstrations extended far beyond Iran’s borders. In Berlin, police estimated approximately 37,000 people participated in a demonstration Saturday afternoon, according to the Associated Press. In Washington, D.C., hundreds marched on the National mall, waving Iranian flags and chanting slogans including, “Be scared. Be scared. We are one in this,” the Associated Press reported.Universities in Tehran also saw further demonstrations on Sunday.
President Joe biden condemned Iran’s actions earlier this month, issuing a statement through the White House. International criticism has focused on Iran’s theocratic rule and the brutal suppression of protesters.
The protests represent a significant challenge to the current Iranian government and highlight growing discontent with its policies.
