Jakarta, Indonesia - A student is under investigation following explosions at a mosque within a school complex in North Jakarta on Friday, injuring dozens, Indonesia’s national police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo said. Authorities are working to determine the student’s background and motive.
The incident occurred during friday prayers inside a school complex in Kelapa Gading. While initial reports prompted speculation of an attack, police are continuing to investigate the cause of the blasts.
Fifty-four people, primarily students, were initially hospitalized with injuries ranging from minor to serious, including burns, according to city police chief Asep Edi Suheri. As of Friday evening,twenty remain hospitalized,with three listed in serious condition.
An anti-bomb squad discovered toy rifles and a toy gun near the mosque, Suheri added.
Witnesses reported hearing two loud blasts around midday (05:00 GMT) as the sermon began. Local news footage showed a police perimeter around the school and ambulances on standby. Images of the mosque itself revealed no significant structural damage.
Relatives gathered at Yarsi and Cempaka Putih hospitals seeking details about injured loved ones,with parents reporting children sustained wounds from shrapnel.
