House Democrats plan Trump administration probes if they regain Congress
As voters prepare for the November midterms, House Democrats are actively mapping out comprehensive investigative plans to target the Trump administration and its allies across multiple congressional committees if they regain control of Congress. Rolling Stone reported that Democratic lawmakers are organizing teams to focus on administration officials, federal contracts, and policy decisions immediately upon taking potential majorities.
House Oversight Preparations Underway
House Oversight Committee ranking member Robert Garcia spent part of a congressional recess in California with his senior staff mapping out potential investigations. Garcia stated that the committee plans to focus on four primary areas out of the gate: Trump family corruption, the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, corporate corruption, and the administration’s handling of the Epstein scandal. Democratic lawmakers are interested in bringing individuals before the committee, including Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, and her adviser Corey Lewandowski.
Earlier this year, House Speaker Mike Johnson warned a room of Christian conservatives that a Democratic takeover of Congress would transform every committee into an investigative body targeting the president’s family, Cabinet, donors, and friends. Polling and private Republican assessments indicate that the party could lose the House of Representatives and potentially their narrow Senate majority.
Democratic Lawmakers Outlining Oversight Priorities
Rep. Christian Menefee of Texas described the first half of the administration as a criminal enterprise and pointed to federal contracts steered to donors, tariff exemptions granted to political allies, and the systematic stripping of federal programs. Menefee indicated that if evidence leads to impeachment proceedings, he would support them. The House previously impeached Trump twice during his first term—once in 2019 for pressuring Ukraine regarding political enemies, and a second time in 2021 for his role in the Capitol riot—though the Senate acquitted him on both occasions.
Rep. Greg Casar of Texas, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a member of the Oversight Committee, pointed to administration demands for states to redistrict maps to favor Republicans, alongside corporate practices. Meanwhile, Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts aims to examine the elimination of diversity and civil rights policies protecting minority communities, alongside pursuing accountability for sexual assault survivors.
Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida added that his priorities include investigating abusive actions within the Department of Homeland Security and ICE, financial profiteering by the Trump family, and corporate corruption linked to the affordability crisis.
Republican Efforts to Mitigate Losses
Republicans are working to secure vulnerable seats ahead of the November elections. Earlier in the spring, Trump directed Republican governors to implement off-cycle redistricting efforts to establish additional GOP-controlled congressional seats. The administration has also pursued measures to restrict mail-in voting.
“We know the center of all this is the Trump crime family — it starts there,” Garcia said.
