Ho Chi Minh City memorial to COVID-19 Pandemic Envisions “Architecture for People”
HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM – A memorial project intended to commemorate Ho Chi Minh City’s experience during the COVID-19 pandemic is being designed to be an active, emotionally resonant space rather than a static monument, according to architect Pham Thanh Truyen. Truyen, honored as one of the “100 global Architects” at the 2017 International Union of Architects (UIA) Congress, envisions the project as a “symbol of recognition of the solidarity and unity of the city’s population in overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Truyen emphasized the project’s humanistic value, stating it should not only commemorate losses but also “reflect the spirit of resilience, sharing and solidarity” demonstrated by the city and the nation. He advocates for an approach of “architecture for people,” prioritizing emotional impact and a calming atmosphere over imposing scale or ostentation.
The design concept centers on an open memorial park integrating natural elements – light, water, and sound – to symbolize “rebirth” and “healing.” Truyen explained these elements possess both aesthetic value and a positive influence on human emotions.
Artistically,the memorial aims to convey the message of “From Loss to Reconstruction,” reflecting Ho chi Minh City’s journey through the pandemic. Truyen suggests symbolic representations like supporting hands, a flying bird, or light shining through water to embody hope, life, and compassion.
Beyond its architectural function, the project is intended as a symbol of compassion and resilience during what Truyen termed a “war without firearms.” He proposes integrating the memorial into the surrounding urban landscape, fostering cultural activities and ensuring it remains a vibrant part of city life, rather than a detached monument.
Truyen hopes the memorial will instill feelings of gratitude, peace, and optimism in visitors, believing this is the most enduring value an architectural monument can offer.
