Gun Attack at Mexico’s Teotihuacán Pyramid Sparks Global Concern Over Mass Shooting Links

April 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

On April 5, 2025, a gunman opened fire on visitors at the Teotihuacán archaeological site in central Mexico, killing one tourist and wounding six others before being subdued by security personnel.

The attack occurred around midday near the Pyramid of the Sun, one of the most visited landmarks in the country, drawing immediate concern from federal and state authorities. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing individuals flee the area in panic as site staff initiated emergency protocols.

Mexican federal prosecutors confirmed that the suspect, identified as a 22-year-old Mexican national, was apprehended at the scene and found in possession of a semi-automatic weapon and several magazines. During the arrest, authorities recovered handwritten notes referencing the 1999 Columbine High School massacre and other mass shootings in the United States.

Investigators stated that the documents included timelines, tactical observations, and expressions of admiration for perpetrators of past U.S.-based attacks. No direct ties to organized extremist groups were established, but officials noted the suspect had conducted online research into previous mass violence incidents in the weeks leading up to the attack.

The motive remains under active investigation, with prosecutors saying the suspect appeared to have acted alone and had no prior criminal record. Psychological evaluations are being conducted as part of the legal process, though no official diagnosis has been released.

Teotihuacán, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located approximately 30 miles northeast of Mexico City, receives over two million visitors annually. The site was temporarily closed following the incident, with federal tourism and cultural authorities coordinating security reassessments across major archaeological zones.

In response, the Mexican government announced an immediate review of security protocols at high-traffic historical sites, including increased patrols and bag screening measures. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) confirmed that additional personnel would be deployed to sensitive locations pending further analysis.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City issued a standard travel advisory reminding citizens to remain vigilant in crowded public spaces but did not alter its overall safety rating for the country. No travel restrictions were imposed.

As of April 8, 2025, the suspect remains in federal custody facing charges of homicide, attempted homicide, and illegal possession of firearms. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 15, with prosecutors indicating they will seek the maximum penalty under Mexican law.

Survivors of the attack, including foreign nationals from Germany, Canada, and Brazil, have received medical treatment and consular support. No further injuries were reported among site staff or local vendors.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s full name or placed him under a formal terrorism designation, citing ongoing judicial proceedings. The case continues to be handled by the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) with support from state-level investigators in México state.
