Google increases link visibility in AI search to address traffic drop
Google Alters AI Search Presentation Amid Publisher Traffic Pressure
Google announced adjustments to its artificial intelligence search features to provide greater visibility for website links and journalistic articles, Le Figaro reported. The search giant’s move follows warnings from media publishers and commercial brands regarding a significant contraction in referral traffic since the introduction of generative summaries. Alphabet chief executive Sundar Pichai noted during a second-quarter financial presentation in 2025 that AI Overviews maintained more than two billion monthly active users across more than 200 countries.
The Tech TL;DR:
- Google is moving contextual text links higher within AI-generated responses and expanding its visual link carousels globally.
- Publisher analytics from Chartbeat show a 40 percent drop in referral traffic from Google between July 2025 and July 2026.
- French publisher group Apig alerted the country’s competition authority in August regarding potential conflicts with prior 2022 agreements.
Evolution of AI Overviews and AI Mode Deployments
The Alphabet subsidiary originally introduced AI Overviews in May 2024 to generate conversational summaries for user queries rather than relying strictly on traditional blue link indexes. In March 2025, the company expanded this architecture by adding AI Mode, which delivers more comprehensive answers and opens a separate window with expanded sourcing. Both features arrived in France in late July under the localized names Aperçus IA and Mode IA.

Under the latest modifications presented by Mountain View engineering teams, contextual links embedded directly within the text will appear more frequently and higher up inside AI-generated paragraphs. Google is rolling out its link carousel worldwide. This visual component places distinct content cards featuring article titles and thumbnail images directly beneath AI overview summaries. According to the company, these carousels trigger specifically for current events and news queries, prioritizing sources recognized by the user. A parallel format surfaces forum discussions and social media posts when users seek specific community perspectives.
Publisher Traffic Contraction Versus Platform Adjustments
The adjustments attempt to address tension between Google and international media outlets. Data published by analytics firm Chartbeat indicates that digital news publishers experienced a 40 percent reduction in traffic originating from Google between July 2025 and July 2026 as generative answers replaced traditional links. In France, the Association de la presse d’information générale (Apig) formally notified the Autorité de la concurrence in August, asserting that the automated summaries breach existing licensing deals established with news publishers in 2022.
Google has also redesigned the grouping of supplementary links positioned at the bottom of AI summaries for users seeking deeper research paths.
