German organic search loses 265 million clicks per month, Sistrix says

German organic search loses 265 million clicks per month, Sistrix says

October 5, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

German organic search loses an estimated 265 million clicks per month to Google AI Overviews, according to an analysis of more than 100 million keywords by SEO data provider SISTRIX. The shift marks a change in how users encounter information as search engines increasingly feature automatically generated summaries above traditional results.

Decline in Click Rates and Traffic Impact

Across all examined search terms, the missing clicks represent a 6.6 percent overall decline. The effect is substantially sharper for queries that trigger an artificial intelligence summary. For those specific searches, the click-through rate for the first organic Google result dropped to 11 percent instead of the previous 27 percent.

Google has been showing AI Overviews in Germany since May 2025. The feature bundles information from multiple sources and places the resulting answer above organic search hits for slightly more than one in five investigated search terms, appearing above classical results in 78.6 percent of those cases. Informational content is particularly hard hit, with individual categories registering organic click losses exceeding 24 percent. Meanwhile, transaction-oriented searches for products or bookings remain significantly less affected.

Shifting Strategies for Website Operators

Fewer clicks do not automatically equate to lower relevance, and Google notes that users arriving at websites via search result pages containing AI Overviews spend more time on target pages with higher probability. Nevertheless, website operators face a fundamental change in reach logic as users abandon the need to visit secondary advice pages, company websites, or specialist articles after reading an on-page summary.

The Evolution of Search Optimization

While search engine optimization remains foundational for technical accessibility and structured content—including a clear page structure, understandable texts, meaningful service descriptions, and verifiable information—its status as the sole measure of success is diminishing. Visibility and customer acquisition now rely increasingly on AI-generated answers, editorial media content, and alternative digital pathways.

To adapt, businesses are looking toward Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, which prepares digital information bases so that artificial intelligence search and answer systems can properly understand and contextualize brands, services, and specialized topics. Unlike classical SEO, GEO considers mentions alongside rankings and website traffic.

German Corporate Decision-Makers Expect AI Search to Grow

AI visibility describes whether companies, brands, people, and specialist topics appear correctly and in the appropriate context within answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, or other AI-supported systems. PR-Leaders supports companies in building and developing this informational basis—ranging from topic development to press releases and editorial formats—having executed more than 1,400 press publications, advertorials, and other PR formats while working with a network of over 250 media outlets and portals alongside access to more than 30 premium publishers.
