Glen Powell Reunites with UPS Driver who Witnessed Initial ‘SNL’ Hosting Offer
New York, NY – Glen Powell marked his “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut with a heartwarming adn humorous moment, bringing a UPS driver onstage who was present four years ago when Powell first received the offer to host the show. The gesture was a playful resolution to a years-long misunderstanding sparked by pandemic-related delays and a blunt assessment from “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels.
Powell recounted during his monologue that he initially secured the hosting gig tied to the original release date of “Top Gun: Maverick.” Celebrating with family, he shared the news with a UPS driver delivering a package at the time, capturing the moment in a celebratory selfie. However, when “Top gun” was postponed due to COVID-19, the hosting opportunity was rescinded. According to Powell, Michaels told him, “Without ‘Top Gun,’ no one will know who the f you are.” For the past four years, Powell said, the UPS driver believed he had been fabricated the story. Steadfast to set the record straight, Powell’s sisters tracked down the driver, identified as Mitch, and flew him to New York for the show.
“so we all took a selfie with him, and this is the selfie to mark the occasion,” Powell said, displaying the original photo. He then invited Mitch onstage, recreating the moment with a new selfie, bringing the story full circle for his family and the unwitting witness. Powell concluded by stating, “I had to wait my entire life, plus four years to be here…and no one knows that better than UPS.”
