Breaking: October 2nd Strikes See Demonstrations Planned Across Gironde
Gironde is bracing for widespread demonstrations today,October 2nd,as unions mobilize against proposed pension reforms.Authorities are preparing for potential disruptions while emphasizing the right to peaceful protest.three demonstrations have been officially declared within the department, with organizers anticipating meaningful participation.
The planned actions reflect a nationwide wave of protests responding to the government’s proposed changes to the pension system, which could raise the retirement age and alter contribution requirements. These changes are expected to impact workers across all sectors, prompting unions to call for a day of action to voice their concerns and demand further negotiation. The prefect of the Gironde, Étienne Guyot, stated last night, “the importance of guaranteeing the exercise of the fundamental freedom to demonstrate, while ensuring respect for other public freedoms, in particular the security of people and goods as well as freedom of movement” and warned that “Any unrelated rally or presentation is illegal.”
In Bordeaux, a demonstration is scheduled from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., organized by the UD CGT, CFDT, and UNSA inter-union.The march will begin at Place de la Bourse, proceeding along Quai des Douanes, Cours Alsace et Lorraine, rue des Frères Bonie, Cours d’Albret, Cours Aristide Briand, and concluding with dispersal at Place de la Victoire.
Further south,in Langon,a demonstration is planned for 6:00 p.m. at the call of the UD CGT inter-union, FSU-SNU, and FO, taking place before the sub-prefecture.
Libourne will also see action, with a demonstration set for 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., organized by trade union organizations including UU CGT Libourne, SGA CFDT, FSU, FS, and SUD. The route will start in front of the Robert Boulin hospital, then proceed along Rue de la Marne, Pont Pline Parmentier, avenue Gallieni, place des Martyrs de la Résistance, rue Chanzy, allées Robert Boulin, Esplanade François Mitterrand, and rue Gambetta Overhamps.
