Gen Z Protests in Berlin: Youth Demand Education Funding and End to Rearmament

Gen Z Protests in Berlin: Youth Demand Education Funding and End to Rearmament

October 31, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Youth protesters gathered at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate to demand increased education funding and an end to military rearmament, while security authorities monitored intersecting extremist mobilizations, euronews.com reported. The demonstration, organized by the youth initiative “Gen Z regelt,” began at 2 p.m. local time and drew participants carrying Palestinian flags alongside climate and social spending banners.

Some shop owners along Unter den Linden, Friedrichstraße, and Kurfürstendamm erected barricades to protect their businesses against potential looting. Protesters converged on the historic square carrying signs with slogans such as “Money for social causes instead of war” and wearing traditional kufiya scarves.

How the Berlin Demonstration Unfolded at the Brandenburg Gate

Organizers had promised a peaceful gathering centered on demands for climate protection, affordable living costs, and opposition to compulsory military service. Demonstrators included a group of 19-to-20-year-old women performing a voluntary social year, who told euronews.com that young people feel ignored by politicians amid rising military budgets.

A chemistry student at Freie Universität also joined the crowd, criticizing his institution’s cooperation projects with Israel and arguing that universities should not support military research. Alongside the mainstream student demands, the demonstration featured visible contingents from far-left groups.

A man handing out flyers at the entrance wore a jumper in Palestinian flag colors, standing next to a representative of the daily newspaper “Junge Welt,” which is classified as a far-left extremist publication by Germany’s domestic intelligence service. Further along at Platz des 18. März, Palestinian flags flew alongside anarchist and Antifa banners.

Political fragmentation quickly plagued the organizing committee. Spokesperson Gianni Matheja and Berlin supporters Max Schneller and Battal Yali withdrew from “Gen Z regelt” prior to the event, citing unclear responsibilities, lack of financial transparency, and fears that the protests would turn violent. Despite internal turmoil, 16-year-old co-organiser Konrad Schmitz from Wuppertal maintained that participants wanted to fight peacefully for their cause.

Contradictory Security Assessments and Evening Mobilizations at Rosenthaler Platz

Berlin police stated two days prior to the event that while left-wing groups were mobilizing in response to French protests, they lacked reliable evidence of targeted extremist control over the main group. However, the Berlin Senate Department for the Interior and Sport warned that left-wing and foreign-related extremist actors intended to co-opt and radicalize the demonstrations.

Investigative reporting by the Berliner Zeitung revealed threats of violence posted in a private Telegram group, including users threatening machete attacks, synagogue assaults, arson, and looting. Up to 5 p.m., the Brandenburg Gate protest remained largely peaceful.
