Gemini Replaces Google Assistant in All Cars, Starting November 20, 2024
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - November 20, 2024 – Google is rolling out Gemini, its most advanced artificial intelligence model, to all vehicles equipped with Android Auto, effectively phasing out Google Assistant for in-car experiences.The update, available globally, transforms how drivers interact with their vehicles, offering more natural and helpful assistance while on the road.
This transition marks a notable shift in the automotive AI landscape, impacting millions of Android Auto users worldwide. Gemini’s arrival promises a more conversational and personalized experience, moving beyond simple command execution to proactive assistance and contextual awareness. The change is designed to enhance driver safety and convenience by streamlining access to information and vehicle controls.
Gemini’s capabilities extend beyond traditional voice commands. Users can now request personalized music playlists tailored to trip duration or even current emotional states – for exmaple, generating a playlist suited for rainy weather – and integrate seamlessly with popular music apps.
Google also highlighted the availability of “Gemini Live” on Android Auto, a conversational mode activated by saying “Ok Google, let’s chat.” This feature allows for open-ended discussions on a variety of topics.
The rollout begins today, November 20, 2024, and requires users to have Gemini enabled on their mobile phones to access the functionality within their vehicles. Activation is achieved through voice command (“Hey Google”) or by pressing the microphone button on the car’s display.
