Gaza Faces catastrophe: Malnutrition Claims Lives as Hunger Grips the Strip

GAZA – July 22, 2025 – The besieged Gaza Strip is teetering on the brink of mass death as malnutrition and dehydration claim an increasing number of lives, including children. hospitals within the sector have reported four fatalities due to starvation and thirst since dawn today, a grim escalation of the humanitarian crisis unfolding amidst the ongoing conflict.

Tragically, a baby named youssef Al-Safadi died from malnutrition in the northern Gaza Strip, according to sources at al-Shifa Medical Complex. The Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Yunis also reported the death of child Abdul Hamid Al-Ghalban from the same cause. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital confirmed the death of ahmed Al-Hasanat, another victim of malnutrition.

The Director of Medical Relief in Gaza issued a stark warning, stating, “The sector has entered the danger stage of starvation, and we expect a collective death of women and children.” They further revealed that 60,000 pregnant individuals in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition and hunger, highlighting the devastating impact on the moast vulnerable populations.

Thirst is now a pervasive threat across Gaza, with a spokesperson for the gaza municipality reporting that per capita water availability has plummeted to less than 5 liters per day for all essential needs. Water wells are currently meeting less than 12% of the daily demand, exacerbating the dire situation.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has described the escalating malnutrition crisis in Gaza as “the worst ever,” emphasizing that “whoever survives bombs faces hunger.” OCHA reports that 2.1 million people are concentrated in a small area of the sector, lacking adequate food and clean water. Hospitals are reportedly collapsing under the strain of casualties and a severe shortage of basic supplies.

The Ministry of Health in gaza announced on Monday that 20 people had died from starvation within the preceding 48 hours. The previous Sunday, the ministry had reported over 900 Palestinian deaths, including 71 children, attributed to hunger and malnutrition as the commencement of the Israeli war on the Strip. The overall death toll from the Israeli aggression has now reached 59,029 martyrs, with 142,135 injured as October 7, 2023.

The situation in Gaza demands immediate international attention and action to prevent a further humanitarian catastrophe.
