Donkey Kong Bananza Scoops Critics’ Choice award, Eyes Game of teh Year
London, UK – November 21, 2025 – Donkey Kong Bananza has secured a major win, taking home the Critics’ Choice Award at this year’s Golden Joysticks. The declaration, made yesterday, recognizes the platformer’s innovative gameplay and widespread appeal, adding momentum as it competes for the coveted Game of the Year title at The Game Awards.
The award celebrates a standout year for the nintendo title, lauded for its originality and enjoyment. Nintendo Life’s review awarded Donkey Kong Bananza an “excellent” nine out of ten stars, stating, “Whether it’s smashing through the scenery with a Bananza Transformation or carefully planning a route to a hidden Banandium Gem, you’ll have trouble finding more originality and, crucially, more enjoyment from a platformer in recent years. As the DK Rap so wisely said, “Donkey Kong is here.” Now let’s just hope he stays.”
this win arrives as donkey Kong Bananza is also nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards, were it faces stiff competition. nominees include Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (with 12 nominations), Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
The Golden Joystick Awards are voted on by the gaming public, making the Critics’ Choice Award a notably meaningful indicator of industry recognition. Nintendo Europe accepted the award via Twitter (@NintendoEurope).
