Diakonie expects more people in need of help in the winter

In view of rising energy and food costs, Diakonie Hessen expects the number of people seeking help to increase significantly in the winter compared to previous years. “More people will come to our facilities who were not our customers before,” said Katharina Alborea, head of the first aid department for housing at Diakonie Hessen, the dpa. “One-day stays, where you are hot and maybe you can get a cup of coffee or tea for little money, are attractive to people who sit in their booth and freeze.”

How the rising costs of such facilities can be addressed still needs to be clarified, he said. Food banks, for example, were very popular, but the costs of cooling and transporting food also increased. The social worker also assumes that counseling and prevention services need to be expanded, not only for the homeless, but also for people with low rent or pension debts, for whom the costs are overwhelming their heads. It is also important to break down psychological barriers, especially for those who are ashamed of suddenly having to seek help. “You have to convince them that there is nothing wrong with submitting an application.”
