Former Correction Officers Trial: Brooks Beating Witnesses Testify

Doctor Testifies in Correctional Facility Beating Death Trial

UTICA, New York (WWNY) – ⁣The trial of⁤ three former correction officers accused in the death of⁢ marcy Correctional Facility inmate Robert Brooks continued Thursday in Oneida County Court with testimony focusing on the injuries Brooks sustained in December 2024.

Dr. andrea Marin, a physician at​ Wynn Hospital in‍ Utica, was the first‌ witness to take the stand.She testified she treated Brooks on ‌December 7th following an altercation at Mohawk‌ Correctional facility.‌ Dr. Marin ‍described Brooks as alert and respectful, noting he complained of a ⁢headache and presented ‌with a black eye on⁢ his right side. After conducting tests, she discharged him and did not provide further treatment.

Fellow inmate Michael Peacock then provided testimony ⁣detailing two incidents of alleged ⁤assault against Brooks. Peacock stated Brooks arrived⁣ at their housing unit on December 8th appearing ill. He recounted that Brooks was afterward⁣ attacked by a group of inmates after being instructed by a correction officer ​to clean up vomit‍ in his cell, which he was to weak to do.

Peacock testified a second assault occurred ⁢on December 9th, again initiated by the same inmates. He stated one assailant used a “lock in a sock” – a combination lock concealed within a sock⁤ – as a weapon.

Asma Mohammed, a nurse practitioner at Mohawk Correctional Facility, also testified.⁢ She examined Brooks⁣ on December 9th after learning he had been involved in an altercation. ⁤Mohammed observed a slightly swollen nose with a minor cut and initially suspected a nasal fracture, though an x-ray revealed no significant damage.

The court recessed for lunch at 12:05 p.m., with testimony scheduled to resume at 1:15 p.m. The trial involves three former correction officers, including ⁢adams resident‌ David Kingsley.
