Republican state senators Blaise Ingoglia and Jay Collins have publicly stated that their observations of the “Alligator Alcatraz” facility do not align with the critical rhetoric emanating from democrats. Ingoglia described the facility as “safe and well-run,” while Collins reported seeing “no squalor.”

Collins addressed concerns raised by Florida Democrats regarding cage-style units housing 32 men with only three shared toilet-sink combinations. He acknowledged that while such an arrangement might not be ideal for a private residence, he characterized the facility as a “transitional holding facility.”

The Trump administration has also maintained that it is not creating inhumane conditions at the facility. However, the administration has sought to distance itself from “Alligator Alcatraz” following a lawsuit filed by environmental organizations challenging the detention center.

Reporting from the Associated Press, based on accounts from individuals detained at the facility, paints a starkly different picture. These insider reports allege that “worms turn up in the food,” toilets “don’t flush,” floors are flooded with “fecal waste,” and “mosquitoes and other insects are everywhere.”

One Venezuelan detainee, who requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation, described the cells as “zoo cages.” This individual, who stated they were confined 24 hours a day without windows or any indication of time, recounted an instance were detainees were left without food all night after protesting conditions and refusing to go to the dining room.
