European Leaders Back Ukraine Support, Excluding Hungary

Tallinn,Estonia – August 12,2025 – A coalition of 23 parliamentary committee chairs from across Europe and Ukraine have issued a strongly worded joint statement ahead of anticipated peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled to begin August 15th in Alaska. The statement unequivocally demands the preservation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting any outcome that legitimizes Russian land grabs.

The statement, signed by chairs from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Moldova, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, sweden, Ukraine, the United kingdom, and the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, emphasizes that any agreement must fully respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, constitution, and the principles enshrined in the UN Charter. Specifically, the signatories warn against rewarding Russia for its “brutal and illegal war of aggression” with any territorial concessions.

The principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” is central to the statement, asserting that the future of the nation must be persistent solely by the Ukrainian people. This echoes repeated statements from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has consistently refused to negotiate away Ukrainian territory. The talks in Alaska are being brokered under the auspices of the United States, with Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, playing a key role in facilitating discussions.

The Chairs also express concern that Russia may use the negotiations as a stalling tactic to avoid an unconditional ceasefire and to pressure Western nations into easing sanctions. They cite ancient precedents where Russia has exploited diplomatic processes to achieve strategic advantages. Sanctions currently in place target key sectors of the Russian economy, including energy, finance, and defense, and have been coordinated by the United States, the European Union, and other allied nations.

The statement concludes with a call for unity and resolve, framing the outcome of the negotiations as crucial not only for Ukraine’s future but also for the broader principles of liberty and justice. The full text of the Joint Statement is available here (PDF).
