TikTok & Facebook Users Targeted by Elon musk & Tesla Prize Scam
Social media users on TikTok and Facebook are being targeted by a fraudulent scheme falsely promising Tesla vehicles and $30,000 in cash prizes. The scam leverages the name and image of Elon Musk and Tesla, falsely claiming a giveaway for users who engage with specific posts. however, neither Musk nor Tesla have announced any such promotion, and the tactic mirrors previous online scams utilizing similar prize lures.
The fraudulent posts direct users toward private messaging exchanges where scammers attempt to obtain personal data. This data can then be used for identity theft, account hacking, or direct financial fraud – frequently enough requesting passwords, banking details, or prompting clicks on malicious links. This isn’t an isolated incident; similar scams have previously circulated using the names of other automotive brands like Fiat, Nissan, and even companies offering recreational vehicles.
According to reports from Boatos.org,a Brazilian fact-checking website, the modus operandi remains consistent: offer a high-value prize to attract victims and then attempt to defraud them through collected data. The website highlights previous instances of similar scams involving Fiat, Nissan, and motorhome companies.
Authorities and cybersecurity experts advise users to disregard these posts and refrain from sharing any personal information with unverified sources or individuals claiming to represent Musk or Tesla. The core objective of these scams is data theft and financial exploitation, capitalizing on the public’s trust in well-known figures and brands.
