Drake and Worldwide Music Group too Enter Mediation in Contentious Legal Battle
NEW YORK – Drake and Universal Music Group (UMG) are set to engage in mediation on December 19 at 10:30 a.m. ET, as the legal dispute between the artist and his label continues to escalate. The session, overseen by Chief Circuit Mediator Kathleen M. Scanlon via phone, comes after Drake appealed a previous dismissal of his defamation lawsuit filed earlier this year.
The conflict stems from allegations at the center of DrakeS January lawsuit, which a judge described as a “hefty” accusation. However, Judge Jeannette Vargas ultimately dismissed the claim, stating, ”although the accusation is serious, the nature of a rap battle-often characterized by incendiary remarks-means that audiences do not expect to receive factual assertions.”
UMG has publicly welcomed the dismissal, characterizing Drake’s initial filing as an unwarranted challenge to creative expression. the company expressed it’s desire to resolve the dispute and refocus on Drake’s music and future projects.
The outcome of the December 19 mediation is anticipated to substantially impact the future of the conflict. A favorable result for UMG could increase pressure on Drake, who remains steadfast in his public and legal defense. Industry observers believe the resolution, or lack thereof, will have repercussions extending beyond the courtroom.
