With a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Mississippi,complemented by advanced degrees from Jackson state University and Alcorn State University,Dr. Primer has consistently championed the advancement of music within academic institutions.

Currently serving as the Chairman of the Music Department and Associate Professor of Music at Tougaloo College, Dr.primer has been instrumental in shaping curricula and fostering a deep-seated passion for music among his students. His influence extends beyond the classroom through active participation in numerous workshops and conferences, where he shares his insights on topics ranging from jazz history to the impact of leadership styles on educational productivity. His research has been presented at prestigious forums,including the Hawaii International Conference and various New york University Faculty Network workshops.

As a distinguished saxophonist, Dr. Primer has graced stages alongside legendary artists such as B.B. King, Cassandra Wilson, and Eddie Harris. He leads multiple ensembles, including his own Jazz Quartet, Jazz Quintet, Big Band, and the Jessie Primer Rhythm and Blues Band. His international performances include tours for U.S. troops in europe and guest soloist appearances with military bands in London,England.
