Dover Corporation reports Q3 organic growth and record backlog
Dover Corporation posted a 7% jump in organic growth for the third quarter of 2026, fueled by strong demand in data center cooling and energy transition markets. Management pointed to a 16% year-over-year surge in bookings across all five segments, leaving the company with a record backlog that sits 35% higher than the previous year.
Backlog Surge Contrast With Cyclical Bottoms
The record backlog stands in sharp contrast to parts of the business currently experiencing cyclical troughs. Management clarified during the earnings call that customers are actively reserving future production capacity in tight markets, driving the backlog higher without relying on traditional long-cycle businesses like Belvac, which remain at a cyclical bottom.
That distinction provides potential upside if those cyclical segments recover. Right now, however, demand in critical areas like heat exchangers and cryogenic components is running well ahead of current production capabilities.
Capacity Constraints Offset Volume Gains
Proactive capacity investments in secular growth markets helped lift overall performance, but operational friction weighed on near-term results. Dover absorbed $40 million in year-to-date costs tied to food retail production ramps and duplicate fixed costs while running two separate facilities during a consolidation phase.

Capacity bottlenecks in cryogenic product lines and heat exchangers temporarily offset the cost advantages gained from surging orders. Competitors are working to enter the data center cooling space, but management emphasized that Dover’s highly engineered manufacturing process requires an 18-month lead time to establish new capacity.
Margin Recovery and 2027 Projections
Full-year guidance was narrowed toward the upper end of expectations, pointing to an organic growth rate of 5% to 6% and an adjusted earnings per share between $10.60 and $10.75. Backlog duration offers strong visibility heading into the next fiscal year, with roughly half of the current orders scheduled for shipment in 2027.

Management expects a material bounce in Climate and Sustainability Technologies margins as $40 million in non-recurring consolidation and labor headwinds roll off. Capacity for large heat exchangers is on track to double through 2027 to service accelerating data center cooling demand across Europe and Asia, while greenfield expansions in retail fueling, cryogenic components, and biopharma target completion by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
To protect against commodity price swings, Dover pulled its pricing decisions forward by a full quarter to stay ahead of cost headwinds. Supplier contracts already incorporate pricing mechanisms for copper exposure within the heat exchanger segment, mitigating volatility risks as the company deploys more than $3 billion in dry powder toward share repurchases and strategic bolt-on acquisitions like Clarin and Lichtung.
