Amsterdam Deputy Mayor Rutger grooten has ordered the immediate closure of four locations of the pizza chain New York Pizza following a series of explosions at it’s branches. The closures, announced September 13, 2025, affect restaurants on the Haarlemmerdijk, Overtoom, and two other unnamed locations, pending safety inspections.
The decision follows an explosion reported earlier today at the New York Pizza branch on the Haarlemmerdijk, which caused significant damage but no injuries. This incident is the fourth reported explosion at a New York Pizza location in recent weeks, raising concerns about potential gas leaks or other systemic issues within the chain. The closures aim to ensure public safety while authorities investigate the cause of the blasts and assess the structural integrity of the affected buildings.
According to a statement released by the municipality, the closures are preventative measures taken in consultation with the fire department and police. ”The safety of Amsterdam residents is our top priority,” said Deputy mayor Grooten. “We cannot allow these locations to remain open until we are certain they pose no risk to the public.”
New York Pizza, a popular chain with over 80 locations across the Netherlands, has not yet issued a formal response to the closures. Investigations are ongoing, and the municipality has indicated that the restaurants will remain closed until further notice. The incidents have prompted a wider review of safety protocols at new York Pizza branches throughout the country.
