Czech Republic Faces Uphill Battle Against USA in Davis Cup Clash
DELRAY BEACH, FL – The Czech Republic will open their Davis Cup campaign against Frances Tiafoe, followed by a matchup between Jakub Menšík and Taylor Fritz, as they attempt to overcome a historically lopsided record against the United States. The competition begins in Delray Beach, Florida, marking the return of the Davis Cup to the tennis center after a 21-year hiatus.
This marks the seventh meeting between the Czech Republic and the United States, with the Americans holding a commanding 5-1 advantage. The Czech team, captained by Tomáš Berdych, advanced to this stage with a 4-0 victory over Korea in January and February, while the U.S. secured their spot with a similar 4-0 win against Taiwan. Despite the Americans’ 32 Davis cup titles – the most in history – their last championship came in 2007.
Twenty-three-year-old Jiří Lehečka, ranked 16th, enters his third encounter with Tiafoe with a 0-2 record, having last faced him at the Cincinnati tournament last year. Twenty-year-old Jakub Menšík will also be seeking his first win against Fritz in their third meeting, having previously defeated him in the semifinals of the Miami tournament earlier this year.
The United States defeated Sweden at the Delray Beach tennis center in 2004, and will be looking to add another triumph to their record on home soil.
