Cracovia are on the verge of adding Cameroon international Jean Batoum to their squad, though the announcement has been anything but conventional. The 23-year-old forward appears to have jumped the gun on the official confirmation, prematurely revealing his transfer to the Polish Ekstraklasa club via social media.
Reports from Israel indicated Cracovia’s interest in Batoum several days prior, and the player seemingly couldn’t contain his excitement. He initially posted a photo of himself in a Cracovia jersey on his social media profile, only to quickly delete it – presumably after being contacted by club officials. A further image surfaced on a Cameroonian football portal, showing Batoum posing in the kit within the Cracovia dressing room, alongside the lockers of Oskar Wojcik, Kamil Glik, and Sebastian Madejski.
Sources suggest Cracovia has secured Batoum on a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months. The forward joins Cracovia following a half-year stint with FC Ashdod in Israel, where he played alongside former Cracovia player Karol Niemczycki. In 20 matches for Ashdod, Batoum scored five goals and provided two assists, establishing himself as a key player.
Batoum is a two-cap international for Cameroon, having featured in friendly matches against Uganda and Equatorial Guinea last June. His arrival bolsters Cracovia’s attacking options following the departure of Filip Stojilkovic to Pisa and complements the earlier signing of Wiktor Bogacz, who returned to Poland after a spell in the United States.
Luka Elsner, the Cracovia coach, already has Kahveh Zahiroleslam at his disposal, but the Iranian forward has struggled for playing time since joining the club last summer. Despite a lack of direct competition for his position, Zahiroleslam has remained an unused substitute in the two matches following the winter break.
Batoum’s eagerness to join Cracovia suggests a player brimming with enthusiasm, and his arrival promises to inject a new dynamic into the team’s attack. While the circumstances surrounding the announcement were unorthodox, Cracovia fans can anticipate an exciting addition to their squad.
The transfer window in Poland remains open until February 25th, giving Cracovia further opportunity to strengthen their team. The club is also reportedly considering adding a goalkeeper to their ranks, with Ivan Nevistic of Dinamo Zagreb among the potential targets.
Cracovia recently completed a successful pre-round training camp in Turkey, securing a confident 2-0 victory over Zorya Luhansk from Ukraine. Prior to that, they suffered a loss against Sturm Graz and participated in a high-scoring match against DVSC, finishing with a total of six goals across 120 minutes.
The team’s recent form included a notable victory over Legia Warsaw before the winter break, thanks to a brace from Benjamin Källman. Yet, they also experienced a defeat against Legia in Warsaw prior to that win. Cracovia will be looking to build on these performances as they continue their Ekstraklasa campaign.
