Heidelberg Mayor eckart Würzner emphasized the importance of maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere, noting, “Especially in this day and age, people need such cozy places where they can meet and unwind.” The city has closed the zone from Kornmarkt to Karlsplatz to vehicular traffic, utilizing bollards to prevent entry.
Similar precautions are being taken in Schwetzingen, where Schlossplatz will be closed to cars for the duration of the Christmas market, which began November 27th. Yvonn Rogowski from the Schwetzingen public order office explained the closure is a response to requests from both police and citizens seeking increased traffic safety.
The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior confirmed there is currently no indication of specific attack plans. Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) stated that security authorities are well prepared and that while there are no central state guidelines, close coordination with organizers and increased police presence are in effect.
