Oberlin College Student Faces Backlash for Online Remarks Supporting Political Assassination
Oberlin,OH – A student at Oberlin College is facing widespread condemnation and calls for deportation after publicly expressing support for the political assassination of a prominent figure. julia Xu, a Chinese national, sparked outrage with online comments that were quickly circulated and drew sharp reactions from U.S. officials and internet users alike.
The controversy began with Xu’s remarks, which advocated for violence against an individual identified as ”Kirk.” Former New york Mayor Rudy giuliani stated on social media that the matter had been reported too oberlin College and requested the school’s intervention. According to Giuliani, “The campus security department is aware of this and is investigating it.”
The online response was swift and overwhelmingly critical. Numerous users called for Xu’s student visa to be revoked and for her to be repatriated to China.
“I think she got the wrong place. This is the United States, not China. Someone please help her go home. She needs help,” wrote netizen @iamseqouia.theblessedone_.
Others directly appealed to government officials. @dr.julianakim tagged the Deputy Secretary of State, requesting, “if she holds a student visa in the United States, please revoke her visa and deport her to the country.” @jeanserenity similarly addressed Secretary of State Marco rubio, stating Xu “should be permanently expelled from our country” if she is here on a student visa.
Concerns were also raised about the course Xu is taking and its potential influence. “@Operlin College, it sounds like this student and her course are calling for the resumption of political assassination. how can this be accepted?” questioned @unfortuneatecooqie.
Many commenters emphasized the severity of Xu’s statements. “It’s shocking and intolerable – advocating political assassination has crossed all the bottom line,” one user wrote.Another pointed out the potential legal ramifications, stating,”Incitement to murder can constitute a crime… If she is not [a U.S. citizen], she should be deported instantly.”
On Facebook, Bernie Spell called for xu’s expulsion and permanent ban from the U.S., referring to china as her “communist motherland.” Spell also demanded an inquiry into, and potential firing of, any professor found to support Xu’s views.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated on Monday (September 15) that individuals celebrating the potential death of a politician would be denied visas or have existing visas revoked. “We should not issue visas to those who plan to go to the United States but are celebrating the murder, execution or assassination of politicians,” Rubio said in a Fox News interview. “If they are already in the United States, we should revoke their visas. Why should we bring those who are engaged in negative and destructive behavior into our country?”
U.S.Deputy Secretary of State Chris landau last week expressed his “extremely disgusted” reaction to the online posts on X (formerly twitter) and directed consular officials to “take appropriate action.”
Oberlin College has not yet released a public statement regarding the situation.
