China Denies New Zealand Allegations of Large-Scale Espionage
Wellington Eyes Beijing’s Secret Infrastructure Push
China’s embassy in Wellington condemned groundless espionage claims on Friday. The pushback followed the release of an annual report by New Zealand’s Security Intelligence Service, which warned that Beijing was conducting intelligence operations at scale within the country.
The disclosures detailed recruitment efforts targeting state secrets and a covert attempt to install space infrastructure. Those revelations triggered a diplomatic backlash.
Inside the Security Agency’s Threat Assessment
The spy agency’s findings revealed that Beijing’s spies use professional networking sites to recruit citizens who hold access to state secrets. Furthermore, the report disclosed that authorities disrupted an attempt by the military-linked Purple Mountain Observatory to covertly set up Ground Based Space Infrastructure on New Zealand soil.
The local company involved in the infrastructure installation was likely unaware that the equipment would be able to collect intelligence of military value. Security personnel pointed out that this particular group has previously tried to set up its own GBSI within New Zealand and will likely try again.
Beijing Fires Back Over Allegations
A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Wellington accused the spy agency of participating in a wave of attacks, slander, and vilification against China. The embassy’s official statement maintained that these spurious claims either invent accusations out of nothing or falsely characterize routine interactions and partnerships as espionage and interference.
The diplomatic mission asserted that certain forces both within and outside New Zealand are reluctant to see the sound development of China-New Zealand relations. The embassy warned unnamed forces in New Zealand against serving as a pawn for anti-China forces.
A Growing Chain of Diplomatic Flashpoints
The espionage dispute follows diplomatic flashpoints between Wellington and Beijing. Just weeks prior to the intelligence report, the Chinese embassy lodged an official complaint following comments made by Foreign Minister Winston Peters regarding a Chinese-born lawmaker.
