ChatGPT Now Available on CarPlay with iOS 17.4 Update
OpenAI has grow the first major AI chatbot provider to integrate with Apple’s CarPlay system. The feature, enabled by the release of iOS version 1.2026.078 overnight, allows drivers to access ChatGPT’s conversational AI directly from their vehicle’s infotainment system, according to reports from users and Macrumors.
Minimalist App
Apple first allowed the designation of AI applications as a separate CarPlay category with the release of iOS 26.4. Apple is cautious about which apps are approved for integration with CarPlay. For example, web browsers and video apps are not officially permitted. However, Apple plans to introduce Apple TV functionality for parked vehicles, accessible via “AirPlay in the Car” in select models.

Once the iOS app is updated, ChatGPT automatically appears within CarPlay, displayed as an icon on the final page of available apps. The application is designed for voice interaction only; activating it immediately initiates voice chat. Users can then pose questions and receive responses directly in the car. The CarPlay interface itself remains static, displaying no text or images, a restriction imposed by Apple’s guidelines aimed at minimizing driver distraction.
The Competitors Should Follow Quickly
ChatGPT can access existing chat histories and projects, with a corresponding overview available within the app. These chats, including their text content, are expected to be synchronized with the ChatGPT app on iPhone, Mac and web platforms. The voice control system utilizes Apple’s standard template, and direct activation of ChatGPT via the Siri button in the car is not currently supported.
It is anticipated that competitors such as Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini) will soon release their own CarPlay-compatible apps. The implementation, as demonstrated by ChatGPT, is relatively straightforward. However, users should be aware of the limitations imposed by Apple regarding functionality.
Similar to text messages and SMS, CarPlay does not display text on screen, instead relying on Siri to read them aloud, a process that can sometimes be lengthy.
