Charlie Kirk Shot at Utah Valley university Event
Conservative commentator and podcaster Charlie Kirk was shot during an event at Utah Valley University (UVU) in Utah on April 21, 2024. A single shot was fired from approximately 200 meters away, originating from a university building, according to CNN. Kirk, founder and director of the conservative network Turning Point USA, was transported from the scene by his security detail.
Initial reports from the university stated a suspect was in custody, but this was later retracted. Police have launched an investigation, and FBI agents are “closely monitoring” the situation.
Kirk was on the first stop of his “American comeback Tour,” known for its “Prove Me Wrong” format, encouraging debate and discussion with those who disagree with his views. Prior to the shooting, a man reportedly approached the event tent and asked about the number of transgender shooters. He received a response, followed by a second question from the same individual, before a shot was fired.
Kirk has a meaningful online following, with 5.2 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) and 7.3 million on TikTok. Turning Point USA is a non-profit organization focused on promoting conservative ideas on American university campuses.
The incident drew immediate reactions from prominent political figures. US Senator JD Vance posted,”Pray for King Charlie, for a really good guy and young dad.” Former President Donald Trump stated, “We all have to pray to King Charlie, whom they shot. A great guy from head to toe. God bless you!” Trump previously credited Kirk with contributing to prosperous youth outreach during his last presidential election campaign.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the violence, stating that everyone involved would be held accountable and emphasizing that violence has no place in public life. He called for Americans to condemn the incident, offering prayers for Kirk, his family, and those affected.
Videos circulating on social media, confirmed as authentic by BBC, show attendees gathered around a white tent where Kirk was speaking when a loud sound – the gunshot – was heard, prompting the crowd to disperse.
Police confirmed the shooting on X at approximately 10:10 AM Hungarian time, stating Kirk was injured and removed from the scene by security. They also announced an investigation and the arrest of a suspect.
Following the shooting, UVU closed its campus and cancelled classes until further notice. Former President Joe Biden also responded, calling for an end to political violence and offering prayers for Kirk’s family and loved ones.
