Central Texas Cold Front Expected to Bring Lower Temperatures Starting Friday – LCRA
Central Texas is bracing for a cold front to move across the region this week.
Atmospheric Dynamics Driving the Temperature Shift
The current unseasonable warmth is attributed to a strengthening flow off the Gulf of Mexico, anchored by a large ridge of high pressure currently sitting over the south-central United States. This ridge has kept regional conditions stable but humid. However, a major transition is underway as a large trough of low pressure currently moving inland along the West Coast tracks eastward.
Meteorological models indicate this trough will traverse the Rockies between Monday and Wednesday before merging with a secondary feature over southern Canada. This atmospheric alignment acts as the primary catalyst for the cold front, which is expected to sweep southeast across Texas late Thursday into Friday morning.
Light Rain Expected Before Drier Air Arrives Wednesday
The transition period through mid-week will feature localized, light precipitation. Monday and Tuesday are expected to bring partly to mostly cloudy skies, with rain probabilities hovering between 40 and 50 percent in coastal regions and 20 to 30 percent across Central Texas. Rainfall amounts are projected to remain minimal, averaging less than a quarter-inch per day.
By Wednesday, drier air moving inland from the Gulf will begin to inhibit shower development, particularly outside of the Hill Country. Thursday will remain mostly sunny and dry, with high temperatures holding steady between 90 and 92 degrees.
Impacts of the Post-Frontal Environment
The cold front is expected to reach the Austin area before daybreak on Friday, moving off the middle Texas coast by noon. The post-frontal environment will be characterized by sustained north winds of 15 to 25 mph, with occasional higher gusts. This shift will fundamentally alter the regional thermal profile:
- Friday: Highs ranging from the mid-70s in the Hill Country to the low-80s near the coast.
- Saturday: Morning lows dropping into the low 50s in the Hill Country and mid-to-upper 50s in Central Texas.
- Sunday: Continued crisp conditions with morning lows in the upper 40s to upper 50s and afternoon highs near 80 degrees.
National Hurricane Center Sees Low Risk of Tropical Formation
Looking toward the following week, the region will face an overrunning weather pattern on Monday and Tuesday, bringing a return to cloud cover and a slight chance of showers with highs in the low 80s. Following this, a period of mild, sunny weather is expected through the end of the week.
