Cameroon‘s Camtel Navigates Dramatic Revenue Shift as Fixed-Line Business Plummets
Yaoundé, Cameroon – Camtel, Cameroon’s state-owned telecommunications operator, is undergoing a significant change as revenue from traditional fixed-line services collapses, offset by surging demand for internet connectivity. A recent audit reveals a dramatic 90% decline in fixed-line revenue between 2015 and 2020, a result of widespread mobile phone adoption across the country.
Despite this steep drop, Camtel’s fixed-line division remains the company’s primary revenue driver, fueled by the growing appetite for fixed internet services. According to a report by the Accounts chamber of Cameroon’s Supreme Court, fixed services accounted for 67% of Camtel’s total turnover in 2020,with transport services contributing 18% and mobile services 15%.
The audit data paints a stark picture of the decline of fixed-line telephony, once the cornerstone of Camtel’s business. Revenue generated from fixed-line telephone services fell from CFA20.9 billion in 2015 (out of a total fixed services turnover of CFA63.9 billion) to a mere CFA1.8 billion in 20
