California Jewelry Store Owner Assaulted During Violent Smash-and-Grab Robbery

San Jose, CA – ⁤An 88-year-old jewelry store owner ⁤suffered a stroke after​ being assaulted during a brazen smash-and-grab robbery in San Jose, California, on saturday.The⁣ incident, captured on‍ video, shows a gang of ‌masked thieves ‌wielding axes and hammers to smash display cases and steal gold and jewelry.

The San Jose Police Department‍ is investigating the robbery, but no arrests have been made and the suspects remain ‍at​ large, according to ‌a department spokesperson who spoke with the San francisco⁤ Chronicle. The⁢ attack has ‌sparked outrage from local officials and⁣ community members, ⁤raising concerns about the safety ​of small businesses and‌ the vulnerability of elderly residents.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan condemned the violent robbery, stating the video “made his blood boil.” He wrote in a post on X, ​”This is appalling. Watching this senior get​ assaulted made my blood ⁢boil.These people need to face the⁢ harshest possible consequences for their ‌actions.” Mahan added he ​has been in contact with the ​Police Chief and will closely follow the examination.

Video‌ footage ⁤circulating‌ on social ⁢media ⁢shows the robbers entering the store and instantly beginning to destroy display ‍cases. The 88-year-old owner was reportedly assaulted during the chaos.

On Sunday, civic leaders, community activists,⁤ and the victim’s family gathered to demand stronger ⁢protections for small businesses, according to a post on X by Chris Moore.⁤ Milpitas Mayor Carmen Montano stated, “This ⁤attack⁢ was not just‍ on a store – it⁢ was on the dignity of ⁣our ‌elders, the safety of ⁤our neighborhoods, and the soul of our community. ‌We will not stand by while violence and fear take root.”
