WAFCON 2024 Kicks Off in Morocco
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has returned! Twelve of the continent’s best national teams will battle it out in Morocco for the coveted title of African champions. The competition runs from July 5–26.
Tournament Details
Originally scheduled for last year, the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations was postponed because of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. Morocco is hosting the tournament for the second consecutive time.
Across six stadiums, the teams will compete to advance from the group stage. The top two teams in each of the three groups, plus the two best third-placed teams, will proceed to the quarter-finals.
Defending Champions
South Africa enters the tournament as the team to beat, having secured victory in the 2022 edition, which was also hosted by Morocco. According to FIFA, South Africa is ranked 51st globally as of June 2024 FIFA rankings.
What’s at Stake
Beyond the title of continental champion, strong performances in WAFCON can significantly impact a nation’s standing in women’s football. The tournament offers a platform for players to shine, potentially opening doors to international opportunities and further development of the sport in their respective countries.
