BYD Aims for Toyota-Level Quality in Aspiring Overhaul of Production and Management
Shenzhen, China – BYD, the rapidly growing Chinese electric vehicle and battery manufacturer, is undertaking a notable restructuring effort to align its operational practices with international standards, citing Toyota as its primary model for quality control and efficiency. The move, announced this week, signals a commitment to bolstering the reliability of its products as production scales dramatically.
The company plans a three-to-five month reorganization focused on operational efficiency, error reduction, and complete standardization across manufacturing, quality control, and after-sales service. This strategy echoes similar ambitious goals set by Volvo regarding road safety, but analysts caution that achieving “Absolute Zero” defects presents a ample challenge.
BYD’s push for quality comes alongside explosive production growth. in the first nine months of the year, the company produced 113.42 GWh of batteries for various applications.notably, 23.65 GWh – nearly 21% of total production – was supplied to external customers, a significant increase from previous years when external supply represented only a small fraction of output.
This diversification highlights the importance of maintaining consistent quality, as any lapse could damage BYD’s brand image and competitiveness across its expanding portfolio of electric vehicles, external supplies, and energy storage systems.
While BYD has not yet released specific performance indicators or milestones for this initiative, the company is positioning itself for long-term industrial excellence, a process expected to take years, if not decades, to fully realize. The company’s ambition is to achieve management practices aligned with international standards by 2026.
