‘Blind Date’ success Story: Couple Marries in Televised Spectacle, Decades After First Date
LONDON – A couple who found love on the iconic dating show Blind Date captivated the nation decades ago when they exchanged vows in a wedding broadcast too millions. Alex and Sue’s nuptials, televised as a special episode titled ‘Blind Date Wedding of the Year’ on London Weekend Television, transformed their intimate ceremony into a public spectacle.
The journey to the altar began with a lighthearted question from the show’s beloved host, Cilla Black. According to Alex, whenever a couple appeared to be hitting it off, Black would playfully ask, “Do I need to buy a new hat?” In Alex and Sue’s case, the answer was a resounding yes – prompting Black to purchase a smart blue number. What initially seemed like a standard televised date quickly evolved into something far grander.
“When we first said that we were going to get married, they were very calm about it,” Alex recalled, describing the initial discussions with the Blind Date team. “They said, ‘Oh, we’d just love to take a video of you coming out of the church.'” However, by the time the wedding day arrived, the scene outside the church was anything but low-key.
Alex described a massive turnout, complete with numerous TV crews,a police presence, and “thousands of people” eager to witness the event. The couple embraced the attention, even inviting a vast number of acquaintances to participate in the televised celebration. “It did allow us to invite just about everyone we’ve ever met to our wedding, which also helped,” Alex quipped.
Attendees enthusiastically participated in the spectacle, donning their brightest attire in hopes of appearing on camera. “It looked like a really good edition of Songs of Praise,” Alex remarked, referencing the vibrant and colorful scene. He also noted the pressure of delivering a wedding speech not to a typical gathering of 300 friends, but to “millions” of viewers. Despite the scale of the event, Alex described the day as “amazing,” a testament to the enduring power of a televised romance that blossomed into a lifelong commitment.
